Finding the best protein powder for you

Finding the best protein powder for you

Buying a protein powder is actually an extremely tough decision to make.  With SO many different options, how does one even begin to pick.  The first thing you have to decide is whether you want a whey protein (a milk product) or a plant based protein.  Some people have no problem with whey protein and they actually find it works with their bodies better, not me.

When I started getting protein smoothies from the gym I was going to, I never even thought to ask what type of protein they were using.  I started to notice that my stomach would hurt after these smoothies and I would feel very uncomfortable.  This was back in high school when my nutrition knowledge was pretty slim.

In college, I was a nutrition and food science major and started to learn more and more about nutrition.  I learned that since my body doesn’t do well with milk products, a whey protein powder was not the one for me.  I started making my own smoothies at home using my own protein powder that I would buy at the store.  This is where my obsession with smoothies was born.  (they are still my go to breakfast)

Throughout the years I tried many different plant based protein powders.  Some would be too earthy tasting, some were too chalky, and some I just found to be gross.  I finally had a few go to brands that I used consistently (Vega, Beaming, Plant Fusion).  Things were going great; my tummy was happy and then an unforeseen health issue completely derailed things.  Back in May, a combination of wedding planning stress and ongoing sleep issues which caused me to overdose on Advil PM every night caused a stomach ulcer.  If you have never experienced a stomach ulcer, consider yourself extremely lucky.  This was one of the most painful things I have ever experienced.  There was a point one weekend when we were moving (was undiagnosed at this point) that I was packing up my closet and found myself on the floor in the fetal position because my stomach was in so much pain.

What was even worse was the fact that I could not eat anything.  Anything I put into my body caused tremendous pain.  Everyone needs to eat to live, especially someone like me who runs around all day, loves doing yoga and Pilates (from my previous post you know I was in wedding workout mode) and just has a very active lifestyle.  I thought that smoothies would be something that I could handle but boy was I wrong.  My favorite thing to eat each morning was my worst enemy.

It just so happened that shortly after I figured out what was wrong with me, a company (Nuzest) reached out to me about sending samples of their protein.  I said yes of course because I love trying out new things and received some sample packs in the mail.  Even though smoothies had been causing extreme pain I decided to give this product a shot because I mean what was there to lose I was in pain anyway.

BEST DAY EVER, that morning I made a smoothie using Nuzest vanilla flavored protein powder and the pain was SO much less.  I had to get to the bottom of this so I really took a look at the ingredient list on the protein powder.  What I found was this protein was extremely clean. It is 100% natural vegetable protein and allergen-free. No gluten, dairy, soy, nuts or eggs.  No fillers, additives or preservatives.  Just clean European golden pea protein. It is high protein and low carbs and fat.  This protein is easy to digest and absorb and it is alkaline with a PH of 7.8. The alkaline property of it was what really helped since my ulcer was caused by stomach acid.

In my time of need, I finally found something that I could eat.  I started making a few smoothies a day, I started gaining back some of the weight I had lost from not eating and most importantly I was starting to feel like myself again.  With the help of my doctors and medication my ulcer healed but I am now a Nuzest user for life.

If you have trouble finding a protein powder that doesn’t upset your stomach or simply one you just really enjoy, I would absolutely suggest ordering a sample pack of Nuzest and giving it a shot.  https://www.nuzest-usa.com/clean-lean-protein
